Remarks by H.E. Ambassador Chen Yuming at The Reception in Honor of Dr. Qin Dahe, the Laureate of 2013 Volvo Environment Prize
2014/03/23

(Nov. 26th, 2013, Stockholm)

Dr. Qin Dahe,
Ambassador Annika Markovic,
Mr. Olof Persson,
Ladies and gentlemen,

Welcome to the Chinese Embassy in Sweden. We are delighted to welcome Chinese scientist Dr. Qin Dahe, the laureate of 2013 Volvo Environment Prize. Dr. Qin is an eminent scientist of China. His study and contribution to global climate change issue makes him the first Chinese who wins the Volvo Environment Prize. Congratulations, Dr. Qin!

I deem the award of this well-known prize in environmental sciences to a Chinese scientist by the Volvo Environment Prize Foundation reflects the importance attached and progress achieved by China in tackling the challenges of environment and climate change around the world. As a developing country, China needs more international cooperation in addressing climate change and improving the quality of environment. Just as Prof. Bert Bolin pointed out: "It cannot be achieved unless genuine cooperation is fostered in the world." I am very glad to know that Sweden preserves unique experience and advantages in environmental protection and creates many innovative technologies. The cooperation of our two countries is endowed with promising future.

I took my office in Stockholm just a month ago. One of my impressions during this short period of time is the beautiful environment, and the climate change as well. We'll spend two winters this year because it is summer time now in Australia where I just left after serving as Chinese Ambassador for three years. However, I believe, through our further science and technology cooperation, we can well address climate change so as to build beautiful cities and countries, and contribute to the protection of this planet on which all our lives depend.
