Hu Jintao Meets with Swedish Parliament Speaker Westerberg

On June 10, 2007, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with Per Westerberg, speaker of the Swedish Parliament, in Stockholm.

Hailing the long-standing friendship between the two peoples, Hu said currently bilateral ties show a sound momentum of development. As the two countries are highly complementary in economy, there is broad prospect for their economic and trade cooperation, he said. China attaches importance to developing friendly cooperative ties with Sweden and is ready to cooperate with the Nordic country in various fields for the sake of lasting friendship and partnership between the two peoples, he said.

Hu said inter-parliamentary exchanges, as an important part of bilateral ties, play an irreplaceable role in increasing mutual understanding and friendship, in enhancing the public basis of state-to-state relations and in pushing for all-round, in-depth development of bilateral ties. Hu pointed out recent years have witnessed an increasing of inter-parliamentary exchanges between the two countries, expressing hope that the legislatures of the two countries could promote multi-level and various kinds of exchanges to advance bilateral ties.

Hailing bilateral ties and the traditional friendship between both peoples, Westerberg said that the Swedish parliament is keen to enhance exchanges with China and has formed a Swedish-Chinese friendship group inside the parliament. Westerberg expressed the hope to increase mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples and advance cooperation in economic, trade and other areas.

On the same day, Hu met with Peter Wallenberg, Honorary Chairman of Investor AB of Sweden. Hu briefed on economic and social development in China, expressing appreciation of the contributions Wallenberg Group has made to China-Sweden trade ties. Wallenberg said Wallenberg Group is proud of various forms of cooperation with China, and hopes to establish even closer ties with the country.

On the afternoon of the same day, Hu called on the staff of the Chinese Embassy in Sweden and the Chinese Consulate-General in Goteborg, as well as representatives from Chinese-funded companies, overseas Chinese and Chinese students.

State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan attended the above-mentioned meetings.
