Ambassador Gui Congyou Visits Swedish Friends
2019/01/18

On 15 to 16 January 2019, Ambassador Gui Congyou visited an old friend of the Chinese people, former Swedish Foreign Minister Mr. Hans Blix, and the niece of the famous Swedish doctor Andrea Andreen, Ms. Magna Andreen Sachs, respectively. He conveyed kind regards and good wishes for the Chinese Spring Festival to the two friends.

Ambassador Gui said that Sweden was the first Western country to establish diplomatic relations with China. In the early days after the founding of the New China and the beginning of China’s reform and opening up, Swedish friends like Dr. Andreen and Mr. Blix took the lead in Western countries to engage in and help China’s development, construction and reform, making remarkable contributions to Chinese people's well-being and world peace. The Chinese people have always remembered the profound friendship of Swedish friends. At present, China's development has entered a new era, bringing new major opportunities for the development of its friendly relations and pragmatic cooperation with Sweden. China is willing to work with the Swedish side to carry forward the traditional friendship between the two sides, promote common development of the two countries, and deliver a better life for the two peoples.

Mr. Hans Blix and Ms. Magna Andreen Sachs presented precious historical materials, including photos showing the traditional friendship between China and Sweden from their family archives, and gave some as gifts to Ambassador Gui. Mr. Blix recalled his delightful memory about visiting China many times from the 1960s to 1980s, and about warmly receiving a Chinese delegation in 1979 led by the then Vice Premier Mr. Geng Biao. He spoke highly of the achievements China has made during 40 years of reform and opening up, and regarded China's development as a major contribution to the progress of humanity. He expected to see China playing a greater role in international affairs and participating more actively in multilateral affairs such as the United Nations. He also expressed the hope that Sweden and China will continue to develop friendly cooperation and harmonious relationship, and jointly promote world peace and development. Ms. Magna Andreen Sachs, with deep respect, recalled the time when her aunt, Andrea Andreen, volunteered to go to China and participate in China’s Patriotic Health Campaign in 1952. She said that Doc. Andreen’s friendship with China is the pride of her whole family. She is looking forward to visiting China with her family, to revive the elder generation’s story in China and the traditional friendship between China and Sweden.
