Building 5G Together for the Benefit of Humankind
2020/11/02

5G is not a creation of Huawei, nor is it a solo sung by Huawei. It is brought into life by cooperation of Huawei, Sweden’s Ericsson and Finland’s Nokia. To deliver state-of-the-art 5G technology to the world, these companies, each with its own strength, need to work together by pooling their best technologies and equipment and combing them together. From this perspective, the global 5G network itself is pieced together through open cooperation of multinational tech companies like Huawei, Ericsson and Nokia.

The existing 3G and 4G networks in China were mostly built with technologies and equipment of Ericsson, Nokia and other companies of western countries. Huawei worked hard to become a major player in 5G R&D and equipment manufacturing, but it has no intention to exclude or squeeze out other multinational companies to monopolize 5G. Instead, Huawei is willing to share its technology and equipment with Ericsson and Nokia, and work with them to make 5G technology and equipment more advanced and deliver its benefits to all humankind.

After 5G, there will be 6G. If any one or two of Huawei Ericsson and Nokia is forced out, not only will the global 5G development suffer because some of the advanced technologies and equipment will not be available, the global 5G roll-out will also be delayed, with countries worldwide bearing a higher cost and consumers paying a higher price. In fact, it is the dynamics of both competition and cooperation among Huawei, Ericsson, Nokia and other multinational companies that nurtured the rapid growth of 5G. If Huawei, the current leader of the 5G race, is kept out, undoubtedly 5G development as a whole will be obstructed, and the global 5G roll-out will be delayed. It will also put a heavier cost on countries worldwide, lower the quality of their 5G networks, and worst of all, make other countries less interested and driven to compete for 6G innovation.

The issue of cyber security is indeed a new challenge facing all countries. China is also a victim of cyber security violations. China has been working to protect cyber security of itself and the world, and in the process we have accumulated some useful experience and practices. Recently, China proposed the Global Initiative on Data Security, the core of which is to counter using mass surveillance against other countries via ICT. China is willing to work with the international community to jointly safeguard global network and data security. China welcomes creative suggestions from Sweden and other countries to improve and enrich this initiative, to form data security regulations that are accepted and observed by countries around the world, as it helps to dispel suspicions and vigilance in the cyber space among countries for good, to jointly safeguard cyber and data security.

Fear of competition will not bring about technological progress, instead it will only put one behind. Tying to monopolize will not slow down the pace of others, but will only stop one’s own steps. Rejection of cooperation will not maintain one’s advantage, but only cooperation can generate common progress. Self-isolation does not make one safer, only cooperation makes everyone safe. This is the law of history and an inevitable trend of humanity’s progress. We call on countries around the world and relevant multinational companies to cooperate for 5G development, to provide all human kind with access to advanced, convenient and affordable 5G at an early date.
