Ambassador Gui Congyou Exchanges Views with State Secretary of the Ministry of the Environment of Sweden on Climate and Sustainable Development Cooperation

On 30 September, Ambassador Gui Congyou met with State Secretary of the Ministry of the Environment of Sweden Ms. Eva Svedling and Climate Ambassador of Sweden Mr. Mattias Frumerie via video link, and exchanged views with them on climate and sustainable development cooperation.

Ambassador Gui said, on 22 September, in his speech at the UN General Assembly, President Xi Jinping announced that China will increase its Nationally Determined Contributions, take stronger measures and aim to have CO2 emissions peak by 2030 and reach carbon neutrality by 2060. The Chinese side will take effective measures to translate this promise into reality, work to transform our way of growth and life, build China into a greener country, contribute to a green recovery of the world in the post COVID-19 era, and protect the planet that all human beings share.

Ambassador Gui said, as early as 1970s, Sweden has proposed the concept of sustainability, and worked actively to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Chinese side is firmly committed to green and low-carbon growth, and is committed to doing the best to our ability to this end. There is enormous potential for cooperation between China and Sweden in combating climate change and advancing green and sustainable development. The Chinese side is willing to work with the Swedish side, to actively promote cooperation between our scientists and businesses and on subnational levels, work together to defend and promote multilateral climate efforts, and make contributions to the green, low-carbon and sustainable development of the world.

State Secretary Svedling said, Sweden welcomes China’s mid-to-long term emission reduction targets, and commends China’s commitment to multilateralism and active participation in international cooperation of emission reduction. Sweden is willing to strengthen climate cooperation with China, to contribute to the realization of sustainable development of the world.

The two sides also exchanged views on specific cooperation matters.
