On 15 January at the Swedish Parliament House, Ambassador Gui Congyou met with the new Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs Mr. Hans Wallmark.

Ambassador Gui said that the Communist Party of China and the Chinese Government take the aspirations of the people to live a better life the focus of their efforts. In the past 40 years of reform and opening up, China has successfully lifted 740 million people out of poverty. Its next goal is to get the remaining 20 million people out of poverty by 2020 and usher in a moderately prosperous society in all respects. The Chinese Government has always pursued an independent foreign policy of peace and devoted itself to building a community of shared future for mankind. No matter which party forms government in Sweden, China will stick to its policy of developing friendly relations with Sweden on the basis of mutual respect, equality, and mutually beneficial cooperation, and expanding pragmatic cooperation in various fields. It is hoped that the Swedish side will properly handle certain specific issues in the bilateral relations to ensure the healthy and steady development of the relations.

Ambassador Gui said that exchanges between the two legislatures are an important part of China-Sweden relations. The National People's Congress (NPC) of China is willing to strengthen exchanges and communication with the newly elected Parliament of Sweden to promote mutual understanding and trust, and to build a bridge of friendship and cooperation between the two peoples.

Mr. Wallmark said that the friendly exchanges between Sweden and China have a long history. The merchant ships that sailed back and forth between the two countries over 200 years ago have not only opened up bilateral trade but also promoted exchanges between Eastern and Western civilizations. Sweden has been following China's rapid development. It appreciates China's firm commitment to the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and free trade, and China’s great efforts to develop green technology and transform from a manufacturing power to an innovative power. It is important for both sides to strengthen exchanges and cooperation in these areas. The new Swedish Parliament stands ready to conduct exchanges and communication with the NPC of China in various fields and at all levels, and to work hard for the smooth development of bilateral relations.
